VOLUME 32, NUMBER 2 • OCTOBER 2019

Message from the President

Now that it’s October, our League work is in full swing! Leagues across Colorado are educating and registering voters and holding candidate forums and issue events.  We invite you to check out our website www.lwvcolorado.org to learn what LWVCO is working on, learn where a League is in your area, become a member, and participate in events to contribute to our democracy. Local Leagues are doing great work!

By the time you read this letter we will have completed our Making Democracy Work (formerly League Day) conference. For the first time in our history we have filmed the educational sessions and will be posting those on our YouTube Channel, League of Women Voters of Colorado.

Looking back, and finding surprises

Monday, August 26 marks the ninety-ninth anniversary of the passing of the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. It reads: “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.” When I think about this right that I take for granted, it has not been in place that long.

I am a third-generation woman voter. Although I never knew my grandmother, she worked for suffrage and was one of the first women to vote in her rural county.

'Every Word We Utter' moves forward

The bronze monument “Every Word We Utter”, by Loveland artist Jane DeDecker, is moving closer to becoming a reality. Inspired by the suffragettes who worked tirelessly to gain the right of women to vote, DeDecker designed a 20 foot tall sculpture, “Every Word We Utter,” to be placed in Washington, D.C. by August 18, 2020, the 100th anniversary of the passing of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution giving women the right to vote.

The monument honors six women who over the years fought for women’s rights and equal rights: Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Harriot Stanton Blatch, Sojourner Truth, Alice Paul, and Ida B. Wells. “It’s based on ripples,” said DeDecker.

Local League Highlight

The Montrose League was fortunate and honored to host Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold for what was an obviously much-appreciated town hall meeting. By way of note, Ms. Griswold is Colorado’s 39th Secretary of State, the youngest Secretary of State in the United States and the first Democratic woman to be elected to the position.
