Six Minutes of Suffrage: Inez Milholland, 1886-1916

by Lyda M. Hardy, Program Director, League of Women Voters of the Gunnison Valley
Inez Milholland

On Christmas Day 1916, some 10,000 mourners filed into Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol to attend a memorial service. It was the first time a woman had ever been honored with a service in the seat of government. The woman was Inez Milholland. Although not a household name today, she was a figurehead in the suffrage movement.

Milholland was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. She attended Vassar College, where she enrolled two-thirds of the students in a suffrage organization even though the male president forbade any suffrage activities on campus. (READ MORE)
