SUBJECT:  Recent Data News

Below is the update I have sent to the Technology Committee members this week. There is a summary of the activity of the Data Ambassadors and the first announcement of a spreadsheet for reporting demographic data.

This notification is a first step in getting our data collected and reported.   I have started with the members of the Technology Committee (see the list to the right), and I hope that the President and others will encourage other groups to look at the spreadsheet and comment.  Then, about 1 July 2020, we should be asking for a report of the data by 15 July.  From then on, I think that requesting updates every six months will provide us with information we need and provide a rhythm for reporting.

You can find links to documents and other information on the Technology webpage on the LWVCO website.  Check it out !

Here's the email announce that I sent to Technology Committee and then to the Board.

It contains the link to the Google Docs sheet:  Data Collector

I'm not sure we should post the link for the world.  I think the membership might get a report maybe at the Annual Meeting or at the Fall Kickoff or some such event.  I think the officers should be the ones working on the doc and have access.

It's a work in progress and will evolve.

Talk soon, Rionda

News on the Data Front

Data Ambassadors

The LWVUS Data Ambassadors Committee continues its work.  They are examining what kind of data leagues can and should be collecting, how to use that data, how to share the data, and so on.   The goal is to produce a toolkit for local leagues for release at Convention.  That goal seems ambitious, but they are working with the real-life program: People Powered Fair Maps, and will build data requirements from lessons learned.  Stay tuned.

LWVCO Data Collector

While the Data Ambassadors have not defined the types of data they recommend we collect, we can begin our collection of demographic data and update and amend as needed.    Beth Hendrix and I have created a Data Collector spreadsheet on Google Docs that will allow all of us to report the statistics that we can use to tell our stories.

We will ask all of the local leagues to report periodically -- for example, 15 July and 15 January.  Over time, we'll refine the questions we're asking.  As we build up a series of reports, we'll create a picture of our league.

Click the link above to check out the spreadsheet.  If there are other kinds of information that would be useful or better ways to report, let me know (rionda.osman@gmail.com ).

When you follow the link:
  • You will be asked to log into your Google account.
  • On the first page, you can add information  or notes.
  • On the second sheet, Data Report July 2020, you will find the questions to be answered.  Scroll to the right to reach your league's column.

These broad demographic data categories will give us a very general picture of our leagues.

Your websites will be another source of information, and I will be sending out some ideas and suggestions about what and how to collect that data as well.

As we refine our informational needs, we will adapt our data strategies.

Best wishes.  Stay safe.
