Governor Jared Polis
200 E. Colfax Avenue Room 136
Denver, CO 80203
Dear Governor Polis,
The League of Women Voters strongly believes that our state’s laws should protect the health and safety of our citizens by limiting the accessibility and regulating the ownership of handguns and semi-automatic weapons. Given the frequency of gun violence in both Colorado and the United States more broadly, we are pleased to see state policymakers take action to help prevent more senseless tragedies.
LWVCO is a strong supporter of the four gun reform bills that have been proceeding through the Colorado General Assembly. When these bills reach your desk, we urge you to sign HB23-1219 – Waiting Period, SB23-168 – Gun Victims Access to Justice System, SB23-169 – Minimum Age for Firearms Purchase, and SB23-170 – Extreme Risk Protection Order into law. In addition, we hope that you will also support HB23-1230 – Prohibit Assault Weapons in Colorado, and work with the General Assembly to ensure the passage of this important legislation.
While no one measure will solve the problem of gun violence in our society, together these common-sense bills can help save lives and protect the rights of all Coloradans to go to school, go to work, enjoy public spaces, and live their lives without fear of being among the next victims.
Sincerely,
Rionda Osman, LWVCO Gun Safety Task Force Chair & Maud Naroll, LWVCO Director of Action & Advocacy
