Hello Interfaith Council GVP Advocates,

ADVOCACY ALERT: Help to pass CO GVP legislation- 6 bills- that will begin to be heard in committees in Denver NEXT WEEK. 
  • It is easy (REALLY!) to submit "written testimony" by just clicking HERE  and following these steps
    • Check on "Submit Written Testimony"
    • Check "By Sponsor and Bill"
    • Use the drop-down menu to find the sponsor 
    • Use the drop-down menus to find the hearing time and bill to support
  • Your testimony can be a simple one liner like: "This bill is important to me in addressing gun violence prevention in Colorado and I ask for your yes vote." 
  • Each of us urging a yes vote in testimony, which becomes part of the public record, will go a long way toward bolstering the support numbers and helping to justify those "yes" votes that we need to see.
  • Attached is information about all of the bills being considered (with sponsor names in parentheses)
  • You are welcome to write more specific personal testimony IF you have the time.

CO GVP Bills to Be Heard in Committees, March 13 through March 21, 2024

(All of these Bills are Supported by Colorado Ceasefire and Moms Demand Action/Everytown)

 

Wednesday, March 13, 1:30 pm

SB24-131 Prohibiting Carrying Firearms in Sensitive Places (Kolker)

Summary: Would designate places where persons may not carry concealed or openly carried firearms. The list includes day care centers, libraries, recreation centers, community centers, courts, hospitals and medical/mental health centers, stadiums, museums, zoos, parks, shelters for homeless and domestic

violence victims, banks, college and university campuses, marijuana shops, houses of worship, bars, public protests, etc.

Also prohibits concealed or openly carried firearms near voting sites or vote processing centers.

 

Wednesday, March 13, 1:30 pm

HB24-1348 Secure Firearm Storage in a Vehicle (Velasco)

Summary: Would require firearms left unattended in vehicles be locked inside the vehicle inside a locked

hard cover case and not be visible from outside the vehicle.

 

Thursday, March 14, 1:30 pm

(two bills to be heard):

HB24-1353 Firearms Dealer Requirements and Permit (Sirota)

Summary: Would require all gun dealers to obtain a Colorado permit and institute specific measures at the business regarding employees and training and require specific safety measures to deter theft. Would allow for suspension of a permit if the gun dealer was not complying with state or federal law. 

 

HB24-1270 Firearm Liability Insurance Requirement (Woodrow)

Summary: Would require firearm owners maintain liability insurance and require insurance companies to offer such policies.

 

Tuesday, March 19, “upon adjournment”, so could be as early as 10:00 am

 HB24-1292 Prohibit Certain Weapons used in Mass Shootings (Epps)

Summary: Prohibits the manufacture, purchase, sale or transfer of an assault weapon. Prohibits possession of a rapid-fire trigger activator.

 

Thursday, March 21: 1:30 pm

SSB24-066 Firearms Merchant Category Code (Sullivan)

Summary:  Would require that a merchant category code be established for Colorado firearms retailers, where it is their primary source of revenue.  Algorithms could filter through billions of transactiions to identify gun traffickers and persons amassing arsenals and perhaps planning mass shootings.
